Spurs look set to play with a back three this season
TRANSFER TALK
Argentinian new outlet Toda Pasion and newspaper El Dia are both reporting that Tottenham have agreed a fee for Juan Foyth, who steadfastly rejected a move to PSG to force a move through to Spurs.
His Argentinian Primera División club, Estudiantes, need to raise £9.17 million and it seems we have agreed a £9.63 million (€10.5m - AUS$15.58m - US$12.35m) deal, which includes the add-ons previously rejected. They report the 19-year-old (20 next January) has been offered a 5-year contract.
It once again shows that money is everything and that a player will go where he wants to go, it isn't always a clubs fault if a player doesn't sign! The assumption he was going to PSG by the press and other websites has been way off, all the reports from Argentina was that he was insisting on a deal being done with Spurs.
It seems clear to me that we are going to play with a back three and a pair of wing backs. Foyth will be the second central defensive signing and we have Cameron Carter-Vickers coming through as well. Toby Alderweireld is happy at Spurs but wants to retain his release clause which we do not and thus he hasn't yet signed a new contract.
As it is at the moment, with the arrival of Sanchez, we have Alderweireld, Vertonghen, Sanchez and Dier to play at the back with Foyth (when he arrives) and Carter-Vickers providing further cover. We wouldn't have six centre-backs at the club in the first team squad if we were not going to play with a back three, even if we were developing two of them for the future.

Three at the back is a must because of the way the majority of teams set-up against us and even then we can be ‘ponderous’ going forward. The wing-backs have to influence the game from the half-way line and not the corner flag.
Assuming that Foyth and hopefully Sessegnon arrive then, like Sanchez, they are players for the future (as well as now).
For me formations are a moot point because I think Poch is intent on building ‘flexibility’ into his squad.
I’m sure we will see 4-2-3-1 when the occasion demands but I hope it will be the exception rather than the rule.
